Computer Problem Troubleshooting

by Rex Simpleton

There are some basic computer problem troubleshooting techniques you can perform yourself before calling your local tech support hotline. Before starting out it is important to know basic information about your computer. You need to know whether it is a Mac or a PC. You need to know who the manufacturer is, whether you have a white box, a dell, an IBM, etc. You should also know what kind of a Pentium computer it is and what operating system you have installed.

You must be aware of the memory and the space of the hard disc which is present inside the computer. This information is generally provided in the instruction manual or is written somewhere inside the computer. Knowing all this, you are then ready to start with the troubleshooting techniques on the computer.

Things to Keep in Mind

You must always keep in mind the work you were performing on the computer when the error showed up in the computer. You may let the technical department know about the error messages that appeared on the screen for further help in solving problems. You might be preparing a document or working on the internet.

Things to try once you know everything

1. Rebooting the computer may help as this alone helps in solving many of the computer problems 2. A virus scanning may be done by you, after updating it. A virus update is done through an active internet connection. 3. One certain area of the problem should be decided by you. You must try to find out if it is some hardware, software or network default. Determining whether it is a network error is easy as you just have to see if the computer is connected to the network. 4. If the computer is not starting up, then it must be checked whether or not all the lines of wires are connected firmly to the back of the computer or not. The plugging of computer must be in the outlet as it is easy that it gets out of place while the cleaning process. 5. The lights on the computer must be checked whether they are turning up or not. In case the lights of the computer are on, but the computer neither starts nor produce any sound, then probably the power supply to get changed. In such a case, it must be given for a replacement to the repair person. 6. You must restart the computer in case if it stops working and freeze. While the computer is restarting, press the F8 key to know whether the computer would enter in the safe mode. Once you know the program that was installed by you and caused the problem, you must have it uninstalled immediately.

If none of the above tips work at least you are better informed and can give tech support the information they need to help you. The most important thing is to remain calm and to pay attention to what the computer is doing, so you can help the technician help you in your computer problem troubleshooting.
